Kuumalaaminointi, also known as hot lamination, is a process used to encapsulate documents or other flat materials in a protective plastic film. This is achieved by passing the item, along with a special plastic laminate pouch, through heated rollers. The heat activates a heat-sensitive adhesive within the pouch, which then melts and bonds to the item, creating a sealed, waterproof, and durable finish.

The process typically involves feeding the item to be laminated into a laminating machine. The machine's rollers are heated to a specific temperature, depending on the type of laminate used. As the item and laminate pouch move through the heated rollers, the plastic film adheres to the item, and the edges are sealed together. This creates a protective barrier that prevents the document from tearing, fading, or becoming damaged by moisture or dirt.

Kuumalaaminointi is commonly used for a variety of purposes, including preserving important documents, protecting identification cards, creating durable signage, and enhancing the visual appeal of photographs and artwork. The thickness of the laminate and the type of finish, such as matte or glossy, can be chosen to suit the specific application.
