Kustutiste

Kustutiste is a term of Estonian origin that generally refers to fire extinguishing agents or substances used to put out fires. In a broader sense, it can also encompass the act of extinguishing fires or the equipment used for this purpose. The most common form of kustutiste is water, but various other materials are employed depending on the type of fire and the surrounding environment.

Different types of fire require different kustutiste. For instance, water is highly effective for Class A fires involving ordinary combustibles like wood and paper. However, it can be dangerous for Class B fires involving flammable liquids, as it may spread the fire, and for Class C fires involving electrical equipment, due to the risk of electrocution. In such cases, foam or dry chemical extinguishers are preferred. Carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguishers are another common type of kustutiste, suitable for electrical and flammable liquid fires, as the gas displaces oxygen and cools the fire. Dry powder kustutiste are effective against a wide range of fire classes, including metal fires (Class D).

The effectiveness of any kustutiste is determined by its ability to interrupt the fire tetrahedron, which consists of fuel, oxygen, heat, and a chemical chain reaction. By removing or suppressing one or more of these elements, kustutiste can successfully extinguish a fire. The selection and proper use of the correct kustutiste are crucial for effective fire suppression and safety.
