Kustenökosysteme, or coastal ecosystems, are transitional zones where terrestrial and marine environments meet. These dynamic systems are characterized by a variety of habitats, including beaches, dunes, salt marshes, mangrove forests, coral reefs, and estuaries. They are highly productive and play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services.

The unique conditions found in coastal ecosystems, such as fluctuating salinity, tidal influences, and varying water levels, support specialized plant and animal communities. For example, salt marshes and mangrove forests are adapted to brackish water and provide vital nurseries for fish and crustaceans, while also protecting coastlines from erosion. Coral reefs, found in warm, shallow tropical waters, are teeming with life and are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Coastal ecosystems offer numerous benefits to humans. They serve as natural buffers against storm surges and tsunamis, protect shorelines from erosion, and filter water, improving its quality. Many coastal areas are important for tourism and recreation, supporting local economies. They also provide valuable resources such as fish, shellfish, and timber.

However, coastal ecosystems are under significant threat from human activities and climate change. Coastal development, pollution from land-based sources, overfishing, and habitat destruction are major concerns. Rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and increasing storm intensity due to climate change further exacerbate these pressures, leading to habitat loss and a decline in biodiversity. Conservation efforts are therefore critical to protect these valuable and vulnerable environments.
