Kumrovec

Kumrovec is a village in northern Croatia, situated in Krapina-Zagorje County within the Hrvatsko Zagorje region. It lies in a rural, hilly landscape that is characteristic of the Zagorje area. The village is best known as the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito, the Yugoslav leader who ruled the country for several decades in the mid-20th century. Tito was born there in 1892, and his birthplace house has been preserved as a museum.

The birthplace is part of the Kumrovec Memorial Centre, which also includes the Staro Selo Kumrovec ethnographic open-air museum. This complex presents reconstructed Zagorje-style farmhouses, workshops, and exhibits illustrating rural life, crafts, and daily life from the region’s past. The site serves as a cultural and educational venue, linking political history with traditional local culture.

Kumrovec is a small, agricultural community, with the surrounding area featuring vineyards and orchards typical of Hrvatsko Zagorje. The memorial complex is the main visitor draw, attracting those interested in 20th-century history as well as Croatian rural heritage. The village is accessible by regional roads from Zagreb and other nearby towns, making it a common day-trip destination for visitors exploring northern Croatia.
