Kulverter

Kulvert (plural kulverter) is the Swedish term for what in English is called a culvert: a conduit that allows water to pass under an obstacle such as a road, railway, or path. Kulverter are designed to convey surface runoff and groundwater while supporting the surface above and preventing erosion around the structure.

Common forms include pipe culverts (circular or elliptical), box culverts (rectangular) and arch culverts (curved). They can be made of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel, or high-density polyethylene, depending on hydraulic requirements, loads, and local conditions.

Design considerations include hydraulic capacity, structural load, frost considerations, durability, maintenance accessibility, and environmental concerns such as fish passage and sediment control. The goal is to ensure reliable drainage while minimizing impacts on the surrounding environment and infrastructure.

Construction and maintenance practices vary but typically involve excavation and the construction of headwalls or wing walls, backfill, and proper bedding. In some cases, trenchless methods are used for pipe installations. Ongoing maintenance includes clearing debris, sediment removal, checking for blockages, leaks, and signs of structural distress, and monitoring for settlement or material degradation.
