It refers to a surface treatment process that uses a stream of abrasive particles propelled by compressed air to clean, roughen, or shape a surface. This method is commonly employed for removing rust, old paint, mill scale, or other contaminants from metal, stone, and concrete surfaces. The abrasive media can vary, including sand, glass beads, walnut shells, or specialized synthetic abrasives, chosen based on the substrate material and the desired outcome.

The process is carried out in a controlled environment, often using enclosed blasting cabinets for smaller items or requiring containment measures for larger structures to prevent the dispersal of abrasive particles and dust. Dry blasting is effective in preparing surfaces for subsequent treatments such as painting, coating, or welding, as it creates a clean and often profiled surface that enhances adhesion.
