The fundamental principle involves forcing a molten or dissolved substance through a die, typically a spinneret with numerous small holes, under pressure. As the material emerges from the die, it cools and solidifies, forming long, thin strands.

The process begins with preparing the raw material, which can be natural or synthetic polymers, metals, or even ceramics. This material is then heated to its melting point or dissolved in a suitable solvent. The viscous fluid is pumped through the spinneret. The size and shape of the holes in the spinneret determine the diameter and cross-sectional profile of the resulting fibers.

After extrusion, the fibers are typically drawn or stretched. This drawing process aligns the polymer chains within the fiber, increasing its tensile strength and improving its physical properties. Cooling may occur in air or in a liquid bath. For dissolved materials, the solvent is then evaporated or extracted, leaving behind the solidified fiber.
