Kubuntu

Kubuntu is an official flavor of the Ubuntu operating system that provides a complete desktop experience based on the KDE Plasma desktop environment and the KDE Applications suite. It combines the Ubuntu base with KDE software for the user interface, file management, and utilities, delivering a cohesive KDE-centric experience.

The desktop is built around KDE Plasma, with applications such as Dolphin for file management, Konsole for terminal access, and Kate for text editing. The KDE Applications collection includes a broad set of productivity and media tools, and the Discover graphical software center is used to install and update applications. Kubuntu aims to offer a modern, highly configurable, and visually polished interface while remaining faithful to Ubuntu’s server and security foundations.

Development and governance are community-driven, coordinated by the Kubuntu Council with contributions from volunteers and ongoing support from Canonical. New Kubuntu releases are aligned with Ubuntu release cycles. Standard (non-LTS) releases receive nine months of security updates, while LTS (Long-Term Support) releases receive five years of security and maintenance updates, mirroring Ubuntu’s support structure.

Kubuntu targets users who prefer KDE’s desktop paradigm or who value highly configurable workflows. It uses the same Ubuntu repositories and package management (APT/dpkg) as other flavors, allowing access to the broad Ubuntu software ecosystem while delivering a KDE-focused user experience on a stable, Debian-based foundation.
