Kryptausmenetelmistä, or cryptography methods, refers to the practice and study of techniques for secure communication in the presence of adversaries. These methods are essential for protecting information, ensuring privacy, and verifying data integrity. Cryptography involves transforming readable data, known as plaintext, into an unreadable format called ciphertext. This process is called encryption. The reverse process, converting ciphertext back to plaintext, is called decryption.

There are two primary categories of cryptographic methods: symmetric-key cryptography and asymmetric-key cryptography. In symmetric-key cryptography, the same secret key is used for both encryption and decryption. This method is generally faster but requires a secure way to share the secret key between parties. Examples include AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). Asymmetric-key cryptography, also known as public-key cryptography, uses a pair of keys: a public key for encryption and a private key for decryption. The public key can be shared freely, while the private key must be kept secret. This approach is crucial for digital signatures and secure key exchange. RSA is a well-known algorithm in this category.

Beyond encryption and decryption, cryptography encompasses other vital functions. Hashing algorithms generate a fixed-size string of characters, a hash, from any given input data. This hash acts as a unique fingerprint for the data, allowing for verification of its integrity. If the data is altered, the hash will change. Digital signatures utilize asymmetric cryptography to authenticate the sender and ensure that the message has not been tampered with during transit. These various methods form the bedrock of modern digital security.
