Kristályosítása, commonly referred to as crystallization, is a fundamental process in chemistry and materials science. It involves the formation of a solid crystal structure from a solution, melt, or gas. The process typically begins with a supersaturated solution or a molten substance. As conditions change, such as a decrease in temperature or evaporation of the solvent, the solute molecules or atoms become less soluble.

This supersaturation leads to nucleation, the initial formation of tiny, stable crystal nuclei. Once nuclei are present, they act as templates for further growth. Solute particles attach to these nuclei in an ordered, repeating three-dimensional arrangement, dictated by their molecular structure and intermolecular forces. The rate of crystallization can be influenced by factors like temperature, concentration, stirring, and the presence of impurities.

Crystallization is a crucial purification technique. As a crystal grows, it tends to exclude impurities, leading to a purer solid product. This is because impurities often do not fit neatly into the growing crystal lattice. The process is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce pure drug compounds, in food processing to obtain sugar and salt crystals, and in the production of various chemicals and minerals. Different crystallization methods exist, including cooling crystallization, evaporative crystallization, and antisolvent crystallization, each suited for specific applications and materials. Understanding and controlling crystallization is vital for achieving desired crystal size, shape, and purity.
