Kremlinology is the study and interpretation of Soviet and Russian politics and decision-making processes, particularly those of the ruling elite. The term was coined in the West during the Cold War to describe the efforts of Western analysts and intelligence agencies to understand the inner workings of the Soviet government, housed within the Kremlin in Moscow. Given the closed nature of the Soviet system and the lack of transparency, Kremlinology relied heavily on inference, analyzing publicly available information such as speeches, official pronouncements, newspaper articles, and even the seating arrangements at public events.
