Krankheitsverläufen refers to the natural progression of a disease over time. Understanding these patterns is crucial in medicine for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Each disease has a characteristic course, which can vary significantly between individuals due to factors such as age, overall health, genetic predispositions, and environmental influences.

Generally, a Krankheitsverlauf can be divided into several phases. The incubation period is the time between initial infection or exposure and the appearance of the first symptoms. This is followed by the prodromal phase, where early, often non-specific symptoms emerge. The acute phase is characterized by the most severe symptoms and highest disease activity. Some diseases follow a relapsing-remitting course, characterized by periods of worsening symptoms (relapses) followed by periods of partial or complete recovery (remissions), a pattern common in multiple sclerosis. Other diseases might have a progressive course, where symptoms continuously worsen over time.
