Kotidialyysillä is a term that refers to the treatment of kidney failure using dialysis. Dialysis is a medical procedure that artificially performs the functions of the kidneys when they are no longer able to do so adequately. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products and excess fluid from the blood, balancing electrolytes, and maintaining blood pressure. When kidney function declines significantly, these essential processes can be compromised, leading to a buildup of toxins in the body.

There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis involves filtering the blood outside the body through an artificial kidney machine. Blood is drawn from the patient's body, passed through the dialyzer, and then returned to the body. Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of the abdomen, known as the peritoneum, to filter the blood. A special fluid is introduced into the abdominal cavity, where it absorbs waste products and excess fluid from the blood. This fluid is then drained and replaced with fresh fluid.

The decision to start dialysis and the choice of dialysis modality are typically made by a nephrologist in consultation with the patient. Dialysis can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with kidney failure, allowing them to manage their condition and live longer. However, it is a lifelong treatment that requires significant commitment and lifestyle adjustments.
