Kostenmetrik is a collective term for quantitative measures used to evaluate costs in business contexts. It refers to metrics that track the amount, distribution, and performance of costs across activities, products, projects, or services. The goal is to improve transparency, enable budgeting and forecasting, benchmark performance, and guide managerial decisions.

Common cost metrics include total cost of ownership (TCO), cost of goods sold (COGS), unit cost or cost per unit, operating expenses, fixed versus variable costs, and overhead rates. Other indicators such as cost variance (actual versus planned), cost performance index (CPI), and cost per acquisition are used to monitor efficiency and financial risk. In specialized contexts, metrics like lifecycle cost analysis, return on investment of cost-saving initiatives, or cost per unit of outcome are employed.

Methodologically, kostenmetrik is supported by cost accounting techniques such as standard costing, activity-based costing (ABC), and budget variance analysis. Life-cycle costing evaluates costs over the entire life of a product or system, including acquisition, operation, maintenance, and disposal.

Applications span corporate finance, project management, IT and cloud cost management, manufacturing, and supply chain optimization. The metrics help compare alternatives, justify investments, and identify opportunities for cost reductions without compromising value.

Limitations include data quality dependence, potential for misinterpretation if metrics are taken out of context, and the risk of focusing on short-term cost reductions at the expense of long-term value. Effective use requires clear definitions, consistent data collection, and alignment with strategic objectives.
