Kossuthdíj

Kossuthdíj, or the Kossuth Prize, is Hungary's highest state recognition for achievements in culture and science. It was established in 1948 and named after Lajos Kossuth, a 19th‑century Hungarian statesman and freedom fighter. The prize is awarded by the Hungarian state to individuals or, on rare occasions, organizations that have produced enduring contributions to Hungarian cultural life or scientific progress.

The selection is made by a government-appointed committee of experts from relevant fields and is presented at a formal ceremony in Budapest. Recipients typically include writers, actors, musicians, filmmakers, painters, sculptors, and scientists whose work has significant national or international impact. The award is widely regarded as the most prestigious cultural honor in Hungary and is accompanied by a diploma, a statuette, and a monetary prize, with the exact amount varying over time.
