Kosovës

Kosovës refers to the territory commonly known as Kosovo, as rendered in Albanian. It is a landlocked region in the central Balkans, bordered by Serbia to the north and east, Montenegro to the northwest, Albania to the southwest, and North Macedonia to the southeast. The capital and largest city is Pristina. The area covers about 10,887 square kilometers and has a population of roughly 1.8 million people.

Political status and governance have been shaped by a long and contentious history. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. It operates under a constitutional framework with a president, a prime minister, and a unicameral assembly (the Kuvendi). It exercises de facto control over its territory, but its statehood is not universally recognized; Serbia and several other states do not recognize its independence. The Kosovo government engages in EU-facilitated dialogue with Serbia to normalize relations and advance regional stability.

Economy and infrastructure are developing, with services forming the core of economic activity. The energy sector, including lignite-based power, is significant, and the euro is used as the de facto currency. The economy benefits from remittances and international aid and includes active participation in international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Demographics and culture are diverse. Albanians form the majority, with a Serb minority concentrated in northern areas, along with other communities such as Roma and Bosniaks. Official languages are Albanian and Serbian. The population reflects a mix of religious affiliations, predominantly Islam among ethnic Albanians and Orthodox Christianity among Serbs.

Historically part of the medieval and modern Serbian realms and later Yugoslavia, Kosovo experienced a conflict in the late 1990s, followed by international administration under UNSCR 1244 and subsequent steps toward self-government and independence.
