Kortisoolitootmine refers to the process by which the adrenal glands produce and release cortisol, a crucial steroid hormone. This production is primarily regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH then travels to the adrenal cortex, prompting the synthesis and release of cortisol.

Cortisol plays a vital role in numerous bodily functions, including regulating metabolism, suppressing inflammation, and aiding in stress response. Its production follows a circadian rhythm, with levels typically highest in the morning and declining throughout the day. Stress, whether physical or psychological, can significantly increase cortisol production as part of the body's "fight or flight" response.

Disruptions in cortisol production can lead to various health issues. Chronically elevated cortisol levels are associated with conditions like Cushing's syndrome, while insufficient production can result in Addison's disease. Monitoring cortisol levels is an important diagnostic tool for a range of endocrine disorders.
