Korroosioesteaineista are chemical substances that are added to a material or environment to prevent or slow down the process of corrosion. Corrosion is a natural electrochemical process where a refined metal deteriorates due to a reaction with its environment, typically involving oxidation. These inhibitors work by forming a protective layer on the metal surface, or by altering the electrochemical potential of the metal or the corrosive environment.

There are several types of corrosion inhibitors, broadly categorized by their mechanism of action. Anodic inhibitors interfere with the anodic reaction, slowing down the dissolution of the metal. Cathodic inhibitors affect the cathodic reaction, such as oxygen reduction. Mixed inhibitors affect both anodic and cathodic reactions. Adsorption inhibitors form a physical or chemical barrier on the metal surface, blocking the corrosive agents.

Common examples of corrosion inhibitors include phosphates, chromates, nitrites, and organic compounds containing nitrogen, sulfur, or oxygen. The choice of inhibitor depends on the specific metal being protected, the nature of the corrosive environment (e.g., acidic, alkaline, saline), and the application. For instance, inhibitors are widely used in cooling water systems, oil and gas pipelines, automotive antifreeze, and in protective coatings for metals.

The use of corrosion inhibitors is crucial in extending the lifespan of metallic structures and equipment, reducing maintenance costs, and improving safety. However, environmental regulations and health concerns have led to the development of more environmentally friendly and less toxic inhibitor formulations, moving away from substances like chromates.
