Korrakannete

Korrakannete is a term originating from Kannada, a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by the people of Karnataka in southwestern India. The word itself is a compound, typically translating to "eye donation" or "eye gifting" (korra meaning eye and kannete meaning donation or gifting).

In its practical sense, korrakannete refers to the act of pledging to donate one's eyes after death. This pledge is usually made to an eye bank or a designated organization. The aim of such pledges is to provide the opportunity for individuals who have lost their sight due to corneal blindness to regain their vision through a cornea transplant.

The process involves individuals making their wishes known to their families and registering with an eye donation facility. Upon the death of a registered donor, their family can then facilitate the retrieval of the corneas by a trained medical team. These retrieved corneas are then medically evaluated and, if suitable, are transplanted into recipients in need.

Korrakannete is a significant initiative in addressing preventable blindness in India.
