Korouoma

Korouoma is a nature reserve located in the municipality of Posio, Lapland, Finland. It is a geological formation of immense scale, characterized by a vast canyon valley approximately 30 kilometers long and up to 130 meters deep. The landscape is dominated by steep cliffs and a meandering river that flows through the valley floor.

The bedrock of Korouoma consists of quartzite, which has been shaped over millennia by glacial erosion and subsequent geological processes. This has resulted in a dramatic and rugged terrain, with numerous rock formations and steep slopes. The area is also known for its waterfalls, which are particularly impressive during the spring thaw. In winter, these waterfalls freeze, creating spectacular ice formations that attract ice climbers.

The nature reserve is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. Hiking trails wind through the varied terrain, offering opportunities to explore the unique geology and enjoy the pristine natural beauty. In winter, the area is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The diverse flora and fauna of Korouoma include various plant species adapted to the rocky environment and a range of animal life typical of the Lapland region. The reserve is managed by Metsähallitus, the Finnish Forest and Park Service, to ensure its preservation and accessibility for visitors.
