Koronaaritauti

Koronaaritauti is the Finnish term for coronary artery disease. It is a common condition where the major blood vessels that supply the heart, known as the coronary arteries, become damaged or diseased. This damage is typically caused by a buildup of plaque, a fatty deposit made up of cholesterol, calcium, and other substances, within the artery walls. This process is called atherosclerosis.

As plaque builds up, it narrows the coronary arteries, reducing the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. This can lead to symptoms such as chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and fatigue. In severe cases, a complete blockage of a coronary artery can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction), a serious medical emergency where heart muscle tissue dies due to lack of blood supply.

Risk factors for developing koronaaritauti include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and a family history of heart disease. While it is a progressive condition, lifestyle changes and medical treatments can help manage symptoms, slow the progression of the disease, and reduce the risk of complications. These treatments may include medications to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as procedures like angioplasty or bypass surgery in more severe cases.
