Korkeakoulua

Korkeakoulua is the partitive form of the Finnish word korkeakoulu, broadly referring to institutions of higher education in Finland. The term covers two parallel sectors: research universities (yliopistot) and universities of applied sciences (ammattikorkeakoulut, AMK). Both types provide tertiary-level education but differ in orientation, degree structure and mission.

Research universities focus on scientific research and academic education, offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Universities of applied sciences emphasize professional and practical skills, granting bachelor’s and more limited master’s degrees linked to prior work experience. Degree titles, curriculum content and research responsibilities are regulated by national legislation, and institutions must meet quality assurance standards.

Admission to these institutions typically combines secondary school qualifications (such as the Finnish matriculation examination) and entrance examinations or national application systems. Funding comes mainly from government allocations, with additional income from tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students, research grants and service contracts. Several private higher education institutions also operate under similar legal frameworks.

Korkeakoulut play a major role in Finland’s education policy, regional development and innovation system. They engage in international collaboration, offer programs in English and participate in mobility schemes. Lifelong learning, continuing education and close ties with industry are common features that shape their contribution to the economy and society.
