Korkeajänniteteknologiaan, known in English as high-voltage technology, is a branch of electrical engineering concerned with the generation, transmission, distribution, and application of electricity at high voltage levels. High voltage is generally defined as alternating current (AC) voltages above 1000 volts or direct current (DC) voltages above 1500 volts. This technology plays a crucial role in modern power systems, enabling the efficient transport of electrical energy over long distances with minimal power loss.

The primary application of high-voltage technology is in power grids. Large power plants generate electricity at moderate voltages, which are then stepped up to very high voltages using transformers for transmission. This high voltage reduces the current for a given power level, thereby minimizing resistive losses in the transmission lines. Before reaching consumers, the voltage is progressively stepped down through substations to lower levels suitable for industrial, commercial, and residential use.

Key components in high-voltage technology include transformers, circuit breakers, insulators, surge arresters, and transmission lines. Designing and maintaining these components requires a deep understanding of electrical phenomena such as insulation breakdown, corona discharge, and electromagnetic interference. Safety is paramount in high-voltage applications due to the inherent dangers associated with high electrical potentials. Research in this field continues to focus on improving efficiency, reliability, and safety of power systems, as well as exploring new applications like high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission for very long distances.
