Kopsusiirdamine is a surgical procedure to replace one or both diseased lungs with healthy lungs from a donor. This life-saving treatment is typically reserved for individuals with end-stage lung disease who have not responded to other medical treatments and have a life expectancy of less than two years without a transplant. The primary conditions that lead to lung transplantation include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension.

The process begins with a thorough evaluation to determine a patient's suitability for a transplant. This includes assessing their overall health, the severity of their lung disease, and their ability to adhere to the rigorous post-transplant regimen. Once deemed a candidate, the patient is placed on a waiting list for donor lungs. The matching process considers factors such as blood type, body size, and the urgency of the need.

The surgery itself involves removing the diseased lungs and connecting the donor lungs to the patient's airways and blood vessels. Following the operation, patients require lifelong immunosuppressive medication to prevent their body from rejecting the new lungs.
