Kopolümerisatsioon

Kopolümerisatsioon is a chemical process where two or more different types of monomers react to form a polymer chain. This results in a copolymer, which is a polymer composed of at least two different repeating monomer units. Unlike homopolymers, which are made from only one type of monomer, copolymers possess properties that are often a blend or unique combination of the properties of the individual homopolymers. The ratio and arrangement of the different monomers within the polymer chain significantly influence the final characteristics of the copolymer, such as its mechanical strength, thermal stability, solubility, and chemical resistance.

There are several types of kopolümerisatsioon based on how the monomers are arranged in the polymer chain. Random copolymers have monomers distributed randomly along the chain. Alternating copolymers have monomers arranged in a regular, repeating pattern, such as ABABAB. Block copolymers consist of long sequences or blocks of one monomer followed by long sequences of another monomer, like AAAAABBBBB. Graft copolymers have a main polymer chain with side chains made of a different monomer. The method of polymerization used can also influence the resulting copolymer structure, with common techniques including free radical, ionic, and coordination polymerization.
