Koormusmahtude

Koormusmahtude is an Estonian term referring to the magnitudes or extents of loads that can act on a system. The concept is used in planning, analysis and design to describe how large forces, moments or other load effects may be in relevant situations. Koormusmahtude are typically expressed as representative values or time-dependent profiles for use in calculations and safety assessments.

In structural engineering, load magnitudes are categorized by type. Permanent (dead) loads include the weights of structural elements and fixed installations. Variable (live) loads arise from occupancy, furniture, stored materials, and other changing usage. Environmental loads cover wind, snow, rain and thermal expansion. Dynamic and seismic loads account for movements, vibrations, and earthquakes. Loads may be represented as point forces, distributed loads or bending moments, and they can vary over time.

Engineers use koormusmahtude to form load cases and load combinations, ensuring safety and serviceability under different scenarios. The chosen magnitudes depend on factors such as material properties, geometry, span, usage, and relevant standards. In Europe and many other regions, Eurocodes or national adaptations provide guidelines for typical load profiles and design factors.

Estimation methods for koormusmahtude include direct measurement, calculation from known weights and usage patterns, and probabilistic or time-history approaches for dynamic or extreme events. Units are usually Newtons or kilonewtons for forces and Newton-meters for moments. The concept is applicable across disciplines where external forces influence a component or structure, shaping stress, deformation and reliability analyses.
