Koorms

Koorms are a fictional species of semi-aquatic mammals described in worldbuilding literature. They are native to the Valen Archipelago, a temperate coastal region. Adults measure 60–75 cm in body length with a compact body, dense waterproof fur, a broad head, and a laterally compressed tail. Hind feet are webbed, and their dentition includes incisors suited for a mixed diet of aquatic plants and small invertebrates. The name Koorm derives from an ancient local word meaning “to swim.”

Ecology and behavior: Koorms live in family groups called rafts, usually 4–12 members. They are largely diurnal and communicate with soft whistles and scent marking. They construct simple sheltering bankside dens from vegetation and retreat to reed beds during storms. Their diet includes aquatic vegetation, crustaceans, and small fish, with seasonal reliance on fat stores built in autumn.

Reproduction and lifecycle: Breeding occurs annually. Gestation lasts about 58–66 days, yielding 1–3 offspring per litter. Young are born in sheltered dens and remain with the group for several months, weaning around 3–4 months and reaching maturity at 1–2 years.

Taxonomy and distribution: In the setting’s taxonomy, Koorms belong to the family Koormidae within the order Carnivora, with genus Koorma and species Koorma valida. They are endemic to the Valen Archipelago and adjacent marshes.

Cultural significance and conservation: Koorms figure in regional folklore as marsh guardians and appear in crafts and ritual art. In conservation terms within the setting, they are not widely endangered, though habitat loss and water pollution could threaten local populations if unchecked. Protected marshes support monitoring and research.
