The word itself is a blend of the Estonian word “koor,” meaning choir, and the suffix “-maskid,” which originally referred to a kind of ceremonial mask used in rural gatherings. The first recorded use of the term dates back to 1978, when a regional music council published a bulletin about the annual Koorimismaskid festival held in Tallinn.
