This approach is particularly useful in digital signal processing where continuous derivatives are approximated by discrete operations.

The fundamental idea is based on the property that differentiation can be represented as a convolution operation. A specific kernel, often called a derivative filter or derivative kernel, is designed to approximate the derivative. When this kernel is applied to a signal through convolution, the output signal approximates the derivative of the original signal.
