Kontuuripiirtäminen

Kontuuripiirtäminen, or contour drawing in English, is a drawing technique focused on capturing the essential shape and form of an object by drawing only its outline. The emphasis is on defining the edges and boundaries of the subject rather than rendering its internal details, shading, or texture. This method requires close observation of the subject's silhouette and how it occupies space.

There are two main approaches to kontuuripiirtäminen: direct contour drawing and blind contour drawing. In direct contour drawing, the artist observes the subject carefully and translates those observations directly onto the paper, moving their eyes and drawing tool in tandem. The lines may be continuous or broken, but the goal is to represent the perceived contours as accurately as possible.

Blind contour drawing takes this observational practice to an extreme. Here, the artist deliberately avoids looking at their drawing surface while sketching the subject's outline. The focus is solely on the act of seeing and the kinesthetic process of moving the drawing tool.
