This method is employed to improve the detection and characterization of various abnormalities, particularly in the liver, kidneys, and heart.

The contrast agents used in kontrastiultraääniin are typically microbubbles, which are gas-filled spheres encapsulated by a thin shell. When injected intravenously, these microbubbles circulate through the bloodstream. Their small size allows them to pass through the microvasculature, and their high echogenicity (ability to reflect ultrasound waves) makes them highly visible on ultrasound images.

The principle behind kontrastiultraääniin is that the microbubbles resonate at specific frequencies when exposed to ultrasound waves.
