Kontrastfølsom refers to the ability of the visual system to detect differences in light intensity or color between adjacent areas. It is a fundamental aspect of vision that allows us to perceive shapes, textures, and details in our environment.

The human eye is highly sensitive to contrast. This sensitivity is not uniform across all spatial frequencies, meaning we are better at detecting certain sizes of details than others. For instance, moderate contrast levels within a specific range of detail size are most easily perceived. As contrast decreases or increases beyond this optimal range, our ability to detect the detail diminishes. Similarly, very fine or very coarse details may be harder to discern even with high contrast.

Several factors influence contrast sensitivity, including age, lighting conditions, and the presence of eye conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma. Reduced contrast sensitivity can lead to difficulties in everyday tasks like reading, recognizing faces, or navigating in dim light. It is often measured using specialized charts that present patterns with varying degrees of contrast and spatial frequency. Understanding contrast sensitivity is important in fields ranging from ophthalmology and optometry to the design of visual displays and interfaces.
