Their primary function is to increase the contrast between different tissues, making it easier for radiologists to detect abnormalities such as tumors, inflammation, or vascular diseases.

These compounds work by altering the way different tissues interact with the imaging modality. For example, in X-ray imaging and CT scans, contrast agents containing iodine are often administered. Iodine absorbs X-rays more strongly than surrounding tissues, thus appearing brighter on the images. In MRI scans, contrast agents, typically based on gadolinium, affect the magnetic properties of water molecules in tissues, leading to changes in signal intensity and improved visualization of blood vessels, lesions, and other structures.
