Kontaktzündungen, also known as contact burns, are a type of thermal injury caused by direct contact with a hot object. This can occur in various settings, including the home, workplace, and recreational activities. The severity of a contact burn depends on the temperature of the object, the duration of contact, and the area of the body involved.

Common causes of contact burns include:

Stove burners and other hot surfaces in the kitchen

Heating elements in hair dryers, curling irons, and other personal care devices

Hot metal objects, such as those used in welding or blacksmithing

Hot liquids, like those found in coffee makers or tea kettles

The initial symptoms of a contact burn may include pain, redness, and swelling at the site of the burn. As the burn progresses, blisters may form, and the skin may turn white, black, or charred. In severe cases, contact burns can lead to tissue damage, scarring, and even infection.

First aid for contact burns involves immediately immersing the affected area in cool (not cold) water for 10-20 minutes to stop the burning process. Do not apply ice, grease, or butter to the burn, as these can trap heat and cause further damage. If the burn is large, severe, or involves the face, hands, feet, or genitals, seek medical attention immediately.

Prevention of contact burns involves being aware of hot surfaces and objects, using caution when handling hot items, and taking necessary safety precautions in the workplace and home. Regular maintenance of appliances and equipment can also help prevent contact burns by ensuring they are in good working order.
