Kontaktläätsedes, often referred to as contact lenses, are thin lenses placed directly on the surface of the eye to correct vision. They are a popular alternative to eyeglasses for many individuals with refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Contact lenses work by altering the way light enters the eye, focusing it precisely on the retina to produce a clear image.

There are several types of contact lenses available, categorized by their material and wear schedule. Soft contact lenses, made from flexible plastics that contain water, are the most common. These can be daily disposable, meaning they are worn for a single day and then discarded, or reusable, requiring cleaning and disinfection between wears. Reusable soft lenses are typically replaced every two weeks or monthly. Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses are another option. These lenses are firmer, allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea, and can offer sharper vision for some individuals, particularly those with significant astigmatism or certain corneal conditions.

The use of contact lenses requires proper hygiene and adherence to a fitting by a qualified eye care professional. This ensures the lenses fit correctly and are suitable for the individual's eye health. Regular check-ups are essential to monitor eye health and the condition of the lenses. While offering freedom from glasses, contact lenses can sometimes lead to complications if not used properly, such as infections or irritation.
