Kontaktivaateid, often translated as contact lenses, are thin, curved lenses worn directly on the surface of the eye to correct vision. They are a popular alternative to eyeglasses for many individuals.

Contact lenses work by refracting light before it enters the eye, similar to how eyeglasses do. This bending of light helps to focus it precisely on the retina, improving clarity for people with refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. They can also be used to correct presbyopia, the age-related loss of close-up vision, through multifocal designs.

There are several types of contact lenses available, broadly categorized by material and wear schedule. Soft contact lenses, made from flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea, are the most common. They are available in daily disposable, bi-weekly, and monthly replacement schedules. Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses are another option, offering sharper vision for some patients, especially those with significant astigmatism.

The fitting of contact lenses is a crucial step. An eye care professional, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist, will perform a comprehensive eye examination and assess the eye's shape and health to determine the most suitable lens type and prescription. Proper care and hygiene are essential to prevent eye infections and complications. This typically involves cleaning and storing lenses in appropriate solutions as recommended by the eye care provider.
