Kontaktbeläggningar, often translated as contact coatings or contact finishes, are thin layers of material applied to electrical contacts to improve their performance. These coatings serve several crucial functions, primarily to reduce electrical resistance and prevent corrosion, which can degrade contact reliability over time.

Common materials used for contact coatings include gold, silver, tin, and various alloys. Gold is highly valued for its excellent conductivity and extreme resistance to oxidation and corrosion, making it ideal for sensitive applications where reliability is paramount. However, gold is also expensive. Silver offers excellent conductivity and is more affordable than gold, but it can tarnish and form a resistive sulfide layer in certain environments, though its conductivity generally overcomes this. Tin and tin alloys are cost-effective and provide good solderability and reasonable corrosion resistance, often used in less demanding applications or as undercoats.

The choice of contact coating depends on a variety of factors, including the operating environment, the required lifespan, the frequency of contact operation, and cost considerations. For instance, in telecommunications or high-frequency electronics, gold plating is often preferred due to its stable low resistance. In consumer electronics, tin or tin-lead alloys might be sufficient and more economical. The thickness of the coating is also an important parameter, as it needs to be sufficient to provide the desired protection and conductivity without being excessive, which would increase cost. Proper application and quality control are essential to ensure the coating effectively performs its intended function throughout the life of the electrical connection.
