One of the most well-known examples is the Proto-Germanic consonant shift, also known as Grimm's Law, which distinguished Germanic languages from other Indo-European languages. This law describes systematic correspondences between consonants in Proto-Indo-European and Proto-Germanic. For instance, voiceless stops in Proto-Indo-European like /p/, /t/, and /k/ often became voiceless fricatives in Proto-Germanic like /f/, /θ/, and /x/, while voiced stops like /b/, /d/, and /g/ became voiceless stops.

Another significant consonant shift occurred in the High German consonant shift, which further differentiated High German dialects from other West Germanic languages, including English and Dutch. This shift primarily affected voiceless stops and fricatives, leading to differences like the voiceless stop /p/ in English "apple" corresponding to a voiceless fricative /f/ in German "Apfel," or the voiceless stop /t/ in English "ten" corresponding to a voiceless alveolar fricative /s/ or /ts/ in German "zehn."
