Konsekutivübersetzung

Konsekutivübersetzung, also known as consecutive interpreting, is a method of oral translation where the interpreter listens to a speaker deliver a segment of their speech in the source language, then pauses to reproduce that segment in the target language. This process involves the interpreter taking notes during the speaker's delivery and then reconstructing the meaning of the original message from these notes. The interpreter speaks after the source language speaker has finished their utterance or thought.

This technique is commonly used in situations where a dedicated soundproof booth and specialized equipment are not available or necessary. Examples include business meetings, diplomatic negotiations, court proceedings, medical consultations, and guided tours. The interpreter's role requires not only linguistic proficiency in both languages but also strong memory skills, active listening abilities, and the capacity to take accurate and efficient notes.

The advantage of consecutive interpreting is that it allows for direct interaction and a more personal exchange between speakers. It can be more cost-effective than simultaneous interpreting as it does not require extensive technical setup. However, it can also prolong the duration of a meeting or speech because of the pauses required for interpretation. The interpreter's notetaking system, often a form of shorthand, is crucial for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the translation. The quality of the interpretation depends heavily on the interpreter's ability to understand the nuances of the source language, capture the speaker's intent, and render it faithfully in the target language.
