Konjugoitavissa

Konjugoitavissa is a Finnish term used in linguistics and language teaching to describe something that is capable of being conjugated. The word is formed from the verb konjugoida (to conjugate) with the -ttava participial suffix, and the -ssa ending marks the inessive mood of the participle, yielding the sense “in (a state) that can be conjugated.” In practice, the adjective describes verbs that can take standard conjugation forms across persons, numbers, tenses, and moods.

In usage, konjugoitavissa is most often applied to verbs. Phrases such as “Tämä verbi on konjugoitavissa” or “käsiteltävä konjugoitavissa olevana sanana” illustrate describing the verb’s ability to be inflected. The term helps linguists distinguish between verbs that can be conjugated and forms or words that cannot be conjugated in the usual way.

The concept is closely related to taivutus (inflection) and konjugointi (conjugation) in Finnish grammar. While most Finnish verbs are konjugoitettavia, descriptions of non-conjugatable forms are rare and typically theoretical or diagnostic in linguistic analysis. The term is especially common in descriptions of morphology, dictionaries, or grammar materials where the flexibility of a word’s inflection is relevant.
