One common classification distinguishes between task conflicts, relationship conflicts, and process conflicts. Task conflicts, also known as cognitive conflicts, arise from disagreements about the content and goals of the work being done. These can be constructive if managed well, leading to better decision-making and innovation. Relationship conflicts, on the other hand, stem from interpersonal incompatibilities, such as differences in personality, values, or communication styles. These are typically destructive and can damage group cohesion. Process conflicts relate to disagreements about how the work is done, including issues of delegation, roles, and responsibilities. These can sometimes be productive if they lead to more efficient workflows, but can also cause frustration.

Another way to categorize conflicts is by their scope and intensity. Interpersonal conflicts occur between two or more individuals. Intragroup conflicts take place within a group or team, while intergroup conflicts occur between different groups. Conflicts can also be classified as latent, perceived, felt, or manifest. Latent conflict exists when the conditions for conflict are present but not yet recognized. Perceived conflict is when the parties are aware of the potential for conflict. Felt conflict is when the parties experience emotional reactions to the conflict. Manifest conflict is when the conflict becomes observable through behavior. Recognizing these different types helps in tailoring appropriate resolution strategies.
