Konduktio

Konduktio is the process by which energy, signals, or substances are transferred through a material or interface due to interactions at the microscopic level. The term is used across physics, engineering, biology, and materials science to describe conduction. In everyday contexts, it covers heat conduction in solids, electrical conduction in conductors, and the propagation of nerve impulses in biology.

In thermal conduction, energy moves from regions of higher temperature to lower temperature through lattice vibrations (phonons) and, in metals, free electrons. Fourier's law expresses this as a heat flux proportional to the negative temperature gradient, with the material’s thermal conductivity, k, as the proportionality constant. The efficiency of this process depends on material structure, impurities, and temperature.

Electrical conduction describes the movement of charge carriers, such as electrons in metals and ions in solutions, under an applied electric field. Materials vary from good conductors to insulators, with semiconductors occupying an intermediate, tunable regime. Ohm's law, V = IR, relates voltage, current, and resistance, while conductivity (σ) and resistivity (ρ) quantify how readily a material allows charge flow. In solid-state physics, conduction is also discussed in terms of electronic band structure, including conduction and valence bands.

Biological conduction refers to the transmission of nerve impulses along neurons, often enhanced by myelin sheaths that enable saltatory conduction and faster signaling. Factors influencing conduction velocity include axon diameter, myelination, temperature, and ion channel function.

Applications of konduktio span thermal management in electronics, design of conductive materials and coatings, and medical diagnostics of nerve function. In Finnish contexts, konduktio is used for conduction in various domains, with related terms such as konduktanssi (conductance) and electrical conductivity described in domain-specific terminology.
