Kondensimin

Kondensimin is a hypothetical protein complex described in speculative biology to mediate chromosome condensation in eukaryotic cells. In this imagined model, kondensimin acts as an ATP-dependent motor that organizes chromatin into compact, mitotically competent structures, analogous in purpose to the real condensin complex.

The name kondensimin combines a root for condensation with the common protein-name suffix -in, reflecting its proposed function. In many accounts, kondensimin is depicted as a multi-subunit complex related to the well-established SMC-kleisin family but distinguished by a distinct regulatory subunit set and organismal distribution. Its fictional framework is often used to illustrate how chromatin organizers might coordinate large-scale structural changes during cell division.

Proposed structure and mechanism describe kondensimin as a heteromeric complex built from two SMC-like proteins, a kleisin-like bridging subunit, and two ancillary factors. In teaching models, kondensimin binds chromatin and uses ATP hydrolysis to extrude or stabilize loops, thereby promoting axial shortening of chromosomes during mitosis. This conceptual activity is usually paired with regulatory inputs from cell-cycle kinases and interactions with loader and unloader factors, which are also hypothetical in many scenarios.

Biological role in these models places kondensimin activity in prophase and prometaphase, where it is imagined to cooperate with other chromatin remodelers to achieve uniform condensation and to help maintain sister-chromatid cohesion until anaphase.
