This ice formation is a symptom of a problem, rather than a desired component. It typically occurs when moisture enters the refrigerant system and freezes at the low temperatures and pressures found within the compressor.

The presence of moisture in a refrigerant system is usually due to a leak that has allowed humid air to enter. Once inside, this moisture can combine with the refrigerant and lubricating oil, forming a sludge that can freeze. When the compressor operates, the internal temperatures can drop significantly, causing this frozen mixture to form ice crystals.
