Komposztálhatóság refers to the ability of a material to decompose into compost under specific conditions. This process typically involves the action of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, which break down organic matter into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Materials that are compostable are generally organic in nature, meaning they are derived from living organisms. Examples include food scraps, yard waste, and certain types of paper and cardboard.

The speed and completeness of composting depend on several factors, including temperature, moisture levels, oxygen availability, and the size and type of the organic material. Certified compostable products have undergone standardized testing to ensure they break down within a defined timeframe in industrial composting facilities, leaving no toxic residues. Not all biodegradable materials are necessarily compostable, as biodegradability simply means a material can decompose, but not necessarily into usable compost. It is important to distinguish between home compostable and industrially compostable materials, as the conditions required for decomposition can vary significantly.
