The process involves allowing organic materials to decompose naturally, facilitated by microorganisms, to create a nutrient-rich soil amendment known as compost.

These compost heaps can be constructed in various ways, from simple piles in a garden to more sophisticated enclosed bins designed to retain heat and moisture, thereby speeding up decomposition. Typical materials included in a kompostikasat are kitchen scraps, such as vegetable peelings and coffee grounds, along with garden waste like grass clippings, leaves, and small twigs.
