Komposiittien is a term used in the field of materials science to describe materials that are composed of two or more distinct phases, each with its own properties. These phases can be combined in various ways, such as fibers embedded in a matrix, layers of different materials, or particles dispersed in a continuous phase. The resulting material often exhibits properties that are superior to those of its individual components.

One of the most common types of composites is fiber-reinforced composites, where strong fibers are embedded in a matrix material. This combination can significantly enhance the strength, stiffness, and resistance to environmental factors such as heat and corrosion. Examples of fiber-reinforced composites include carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) and glass fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRP), which are widely used in aerospace, automotive, and sports industries.

Another type of composite is particulate composites, where particles of one material are dispersed in a matrix of another material. This can improve the material's properties, such as hardness, wear resistance, and thermal conductivity. An example of a particulate composite is metal matrix composites (MMC), where ceramic particles are embedded in a metal matrix.

Composites can also be classified based on their matrix material. For example, polymer matrix composites (PMC) use a polymer as the matrix material, while metal matrix composites (MMC) use a metal. Ceramic matrix composites (CMC) use a ceramic as the matrix material.

The design and manufacturing of composites require careful consideration of the properties of the individual components and the interface between them. Advanced techniques such as nanotechnology and additive manufacturing are being explored to further enhance the properties of composites and expand their applications.
