The formula to calculate combinations is given by the binomial coefficient:

where "!" denotes factorial, the product of all positive integers up to that number.

For example, if you have a set of three items {A, B, C} and you want to know how many ways you can choose 2 items, the calculation would be:

C(3, 2) = 3! / (2! * (3 - 2)!) = 3

So, there are three possible combinations: {A, B}, {A, C}, and {B, C}.
