Kolmitieventtiiliä, often translated as a three-way valve, is a type of valve with three ports used for controlling flow. These valves can be configured in several ways to direct fluid from one inlet to two outlets, or from two inlets to one outlet. Their primary function is to mix or divert fluid streams.

In a mixing application, a three-way valve combines two incoming fluid streams into a single outgoing stream. This is common in heating and cooling systems where it might blend hot and cold water to achieve a desired temperature. In a diverting application, the valve takes a single inlet stream and directs it to one of two possible outlets. This is used for routing fluids, such as in a bypass line.

Three-way valves are typically operated by an actuator, which can be manual, electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic. The position of the valve's internal closure element, often a ball or plug, determines how the ports are connected and thus controls the flow path. Different internal designs, such as "mixing" or "diverting" configurations, dictate the specific function of the valve.

Common materials for three-way valves include brass, stainless steel, and cast iron, chosen based on the fluid being handled and the operating environment. They are widely used in industrial processes, HVAC systems, and plumbing applications where precise control over fluid distribution is necessary. The selection of a specific three-way valve depends on factors like flow rate, pressure, temperature, and the required control accuracy.
