Kollokaatiot, also known as collocations, are pairs or groups of words that frequently occur together in a language. They are not random occurrences but rather conventional combinations that sound natural to native speakers. For example, in English, "make a decision" is a common collocation, whereas "create a decision" sounds unnatural. Similarly, in Finnish, "tehdä päätös" is a natural collocation, while "luoda päätös" is not.

Understanding and using collocations correctly is crucial for fluent and natural communication in any language. They are an integral part of vocabulary acquisition and contribute significantly to the idiomatic use of language. Foreign language learners often struggle with collocations because they cannot be reliably deduced from grammatical rules alone; they must be learned through exposure and memorization.
